It’s always inspiring to hear directly from our students about their Eye Level Maths journey. Josie joined Eye Level a clear goal: to reach her school’s Extension Maths class.
Although she didn’t find maths particularly challenging, she wanted a structured approach to tackle harder material and set a goal in Term 3 of Year 3 to achieve this by Year 5.
Josie’s Journey
Josie attended Eye Level once a week for 1.5 hours, engaging with tricky fractions, algebra, and critical thinking exercises. She found some challenges in critical thinking tasks but recognised that this was the most useful practice when preparing for exams. Her Eye Level work was consistently ahead of school work, making school maths easier and less stressful.
Josie also participated in the Eye Level Maths Olympiad in 2024 and achieved one of the Top Prizes in Australia.
Consistency and Hard Work
Josie’s approach demonstrates the power of consistency. By tackling harder problems regularly and sticking to her weekly sessions, she developed skills and confidence that allowed her to reach her goal within the planned timeframe — achieving her placement in Extension Maths by Year 5, Term 3.
The Outcome
Extension Maths presents more advanced problems and higher expectations, and Josie is embracing the challenge. She’s now more willing to attempt complex questions and enjoys the added rigor, which is helping her develop resilience and deeper understanding.
In Her Own Words
“Even though the work is really hard, you have to keep on doing it because it helps you,” says Josie, reflecting her perseverance and mindset.
Her mother adds, “Josie was the one that wanted extra help to reach her goal, I just wanted to find a way to support that.”
Tip for Parents: Support your child’s goals by encouraging consistent effort, celebrating small wins, and providing guidance where needed. Eye Level programmes are designed to challenge students just enough to build confidence, critical thinking, and academic resilience.
Josie’s story is a testament to how dedication, the right guidance, and consistent practice can help students achieve their goals and thrive academically. We’re incredibly proud of her achievement and can’t wait to see how she continues to grow.
