By the time NAPLAN Year 5 arrives, your child has already sat the assessment in Year 3, but this round feels different because the content is more demanding, the expectations are higher, and the results carry more weight in terms of identifying whether your child is on track for the transition to high school. This guide covers what NAPLAN Year 5 actually tests, how to prepare your child, and what to do when results arrive.
What NAPLAN Year 5 actually covers
Like Year 3, NAPLAN Year 5 assesses reading, writing, language conventions, and numeracy. The difference is in the complexity. By Year 5, students are expected to read and interpret more sophisticated texts, write with greater structure and purpose, and apply mathematical reasoning to multi-step problems.
According to the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, Year 5 sits at a significant point in the primary curriculum — the point at which foundational skills are expected to be consolidated and applied, not just practised. Any gaps that were present in Year 3 and not addressed are likely to be more visible here.
How to prepare your child emotionally and mentally
Children in Year 5 are old enough to feel genuine pressure around NAPLAN — from peers, from the school environment, and sometimes from parents who are more anxious about results than they realise.
Here are some practical ways to support them in the lead-up:
- Acknowledge that it is normal to feel nervous. Dismissing nerves with “you will be fine” can feel invalidating. A more useful response is “it makes sense to feel a bit nervous — and nerves often mean you care, which is a good thing.”
- Help them feel prepared without over-drilling. A child who has been doing practice tests every night for a month is more likely to feel burnt out than confident by the time NAPLAN arrives.
- Keep the home environment calm and predictable in the week leading up. Disrupted sleep and irregular routines affect performance more than most parents realise.
- Remind them that one assessment does not define their ability. It is a checkpoint, not a conclusion.
Signs your Year 5 child is academically ready
Look for these signs in the months leading up to NAPLAN Year 5:
- They can read and summarise a text independently, identifying the main idea and key details
- They can write a structured response with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion
- They are comfortable with fractions, decimals, and multi-step maths problems
- They can work independently on a task without needing constant prompting or reassurance
- They manage written homework with reasonable consistency
If several of these are not yet consistent, the time to act is now — before the assessment rather than after it.
What to do if NAPLAN Year 5 results reveal a gap
Year 5 NAPLAN results are particularly worth paying attention to because the next assessment is in Year 7, after the transition to high school, when the curriculum becomes significantly more demanding and the opportunity for individual support in the classroom decreases.
Read the results at a strand level. A child who struggles with language conventions needs different support from one whose reading comprehension is the primary gap. The more specific your understanding of where the gap sits, the more effective any intervention can be.
If the results reveal something worth addressing, act sooner rather than later. A gap that is identified and addressed in Year 5 is significantly easier to close than one that carries into Year 7.
A diagnostic assessment gives you the clearest possible picture of where your child is and what they need. It identifies not just the surface-level struggle but the foundational concept underneath it which is where effective support needs to start.
