Here’s a practical guide to help your child prepare confidently.
1. What the Reading Test Involves
The Reading test runs for 65 minutes and consists of multiple-choice questions based on a variety of texts such as:
- Stories and extracts from novels
- Information reports
- Advertisements
- News articles or opinion pieces
- Poems or plays
Students read a text and answer questions that assess comprehension, inference, and vocabulary understanding.
2. Key Skills the Test Assesses
The Reading test focuses on a student’s ability to:
- Identify main ideas and supporting details
- Infer meaning from context
- Interpret figurative language
- Compare and evaluate ideas
- Analyse tone, purpose, and audience
3. Building Strong Reading Habits
Encourage daily reading of diverse materials. A mix of fiction, news, and factual articles exposes students to different styles and vocabularies.
Try:
- 20 minutes of daily reading (novels, essays, short stories)
- Discussing what they read: “Why do you think the author wrote this?”
- Highlighting unfamiliar words and looking them up together
4. Practice Inference and Analysis
Inference — reading between the lines — is often the hardest part.
To strengthen this skill:
- Ask “What clues helped you know that?” after reading a passage
- Discuss implied meaning (what’s not said directly)
- Compare viewpoints across different articles on the same topic
5. Test Practice Under Real Conditions
Use practice passages to build stamina.
Set a timer for 65 minutes and simulate exam conditions.
Afterward, review mistakes together — not to criticise, but to help your child understand why an answer was incorrect.
6. Keep Reading Enjoyable
Avoid turning reading into a chore. Let your child choose genres they enjoy — graphic novels, fantasy, mystery — and mix in academic-style texts later.
Reading for pleasure improves comprehension and vocabulary far more naturally than rote drilling.
